As the 2017 International Laboratory Design Conference approaches September 20-21, we will continue to make exciting announcements about what you can expect at this inaugural global event in Madrid. Lab professionals will gather for this first-of-its kind lab design conference, which is presented by Laboratory Design in partnership with SEFA. This new meeting follows the successful 16th annual Laboratory Design Conference in Raleigh, NC. Registration details for the Madrid conference can be found here.

The morning Keynote Presentation on Thursday, September 21, will be led by Bill Odell and Randy Kray, Senior Vice Presidents at HOK, as well as Jorge Santos, Head of the International Division of Flores Valles.

They will be presenting a discussion on designing the Francis Crick Institute, London, UK, which won the 51st Laboratory of the Year Award in April 2017, the prestigious lab design award created by R&D Magazine and Laboratory Design to recognize innovations and forward-thinking lab design.

Breaking with traditional governance and tenure structures in research institutions, the Francis Crick Institute represents a major paradigm shift for biomedical research in the UK—and for the global research community.

A visionary group composed of a UK government funding agency, two charities and three leading universities came together to form the Francis Crick Institute: Europe’s single largest and most ambitious biomedical research facility. They shared a vision for reshaping the future of biomedical research in the UK through a strong commitment to translational research and supporting the next generation research leader.

The Crick’s overarching strategy—Discovery without Boundaries—emphasizes the importance of collaboration and a culture of sharing. Multidisciplinary and interactive environments enable this strategy, grounded in a facility that can flex to meet the Institute’s needs now and well into the future.

Speakers Bill Odell and Randy Kray of HOK, and Jorge Santos of Flores Valles, will take the audience through an armchair tour of the award-winning Francis Crick Institute, outlining the 5 Strategic Priorities that became the drivers for this innovative design. They will address design and forward-thinking scientific workplace strategies down to detailed casework design and then open the discussion up to questions from the audience.
