Our world is changing in line with universally accepted megatrends—Globalization and Sustainability, just to name two of them. Technology has moved into almost every aspect of our everyday life. We can turn lights on and off from our phone, open doors from our computer and even watch the latest movies and sporting events wherever whenever we like. Does this stop at the doors of our research facilities?

Scientific research and teaching facilities are facing ever changing requirements, too. The subject of sustainable laboratories, for instance, is already an unavoidable part of our everyday activities. Laboratory design, construction and operation all over the world is adopting to changing requirements in research facilities.

This presentation will discuss and focus on resulting trends in international scientific facility design and development and will provide practical ideas for improving existing laboratories as well as holistic design principles for new facilities. The methodology and advantages of a holistic approach—“Lab in a Box”—for landlords, facility managers and users will be discussed and illustrated.

Questions that will be addressed include:

  • How do global megatrends affect laboratory design, construction and operation?
  • What are resulting international trends in laboratory design?
  • How future proof can today’s facilities be?
  • What are some examples of methodology and advantages of a holistic approach to laboratory design, construction and operation?
